From 2009 to 2015 or so I created many textured works on canvas that are part painting / part sculpture. I used a variety of materials and mixed media to create the deep textures. I often enhanced the textures with gold leaf. Most of these have been sold but I have a couple of large red/orange works which were on show at a restaurant in central London for a year. Please contact me if you would like to see them. With larger pieces some customers prefer to spread their payments and so monthly payment terms can be arranged.
Many of these canvas works were inspired by human cells, particularly those of the immune system, although viewers often see them as planets or moons. These are the white blood cells, (which I paint in many colours including white.) These cells keep us healthy by searching out and destroying unhealthy bacteria. The gold oval shapes represent the mitochondria – the “power-houses” of the cell, which create energy. I’d never even heard of mitochondria until my “Happy Cells” exhibition in St George’s Hospital Tooting, where a doctor told me what they were. I was duly impressed that I’d subconsciously been including something so important, and covering them in real gold!
